Ok so this time last week the Spiderman demo hit the 3ds and so far it was short compared to the Resident Evil game. For starters resident evil had about the same number of block space but had 30 uses set to it Spiderman only has 10. This is the start of a few noticeable problems with the demo. The biggest one is the muddy textures that take away form an interesting story with the 3ds version not looking as well as well as edge of time and my guessing is that having edge of time closed in like it was helped hide seams and other weird things on the 3ds. The last gripe I have is the lack of skills you the player get experience but can’t use your gotten skill points for powers because of the age old you must buy the game problem that a lot of developers love to tease. There was more than one difficulty setting if you’re into harder bosses and ai bots but sadly it is not used because the demo is one level long. If you are playing normally you can see it all on easy. I chose superhero to run through the demo which was supposed to be hard I’m guessing.
So what’s good about the demo and why should you play it. The fact that the Black Cat reminds me her Ultimate counterpart is one thing as a comic book fan I am happy of. The Black Cat is the main villain of the demo and it’s your job to hunt her down and bring her into the cops and beat up the thugs along the way. In the process the level becomes more open for exploration the last game with places like the roof of the building and various offices open to explore. The sad part is I can’t open doors and really explore this level because it’s a nice concept to be honest. The level is far from short and you are fighting thugs using fists, webs, and your web rush ability which I found to get my almost killed most of the time as well as an evade button to stay alive. This is a blood splat damage meter that says how close you are to death built into the formula this time. Think uncharted and getting shot at more than once. There is more than one mini quest from collecting magazines for experience and doing web rush combos for experience to taking photos of Oscorp logos also for experience and probably added ending content.
This game is open world even in closed off spaces which doesn’t set well with me since open world and closed world Spiderman games seem to be failures for the same reasons of too much and not enough content. The use an objective oriented system with waypoints to keep the player from freefalling into the sandbox game heck land of getting lost in a city of buildings that all look the same at times helps keep my fear in check. There are about 6 quest objectives which carry over from the bank to the bank vault down through a turned over subway car and into the hidden Boss room of the game and back again. Sadly it’s a beat em upper with the same style of ai villains popping up between you and the Black Cat which can be dull at times. Object destruction is there to be used you can kick up a helium tank with web rush and fling it at thugs or other close by objects. The timing is key to web rush is good timing which can lead to taking out more than more hired gunman or dealing damage to the levels boss.. Combos are used for experience building for skill counts and there is grading score at the end. The sad part of the demo is walking the Black cat back through an empty level instead of fade to black because that seemed rather useless.
The boss fight was nice and Beenox up played the Black Cat’s skills which makes the web rush useful as well as the evade button since she’s about the hardest part of the game. The boss fight has about 3 acts to it traditional get her to stop and lock on and beat her up mode is the first portion to where the user is taught that web rush is the only way to get a hit on her. The second act of the fight is paralyzing grenades and the user learns to avoid things that leave you open to damage and how to use the evade button. The final part is a hide and go seek game to where she throws a smoke bomb and a cat’s eye icon appears and then she randomly pops up somewhere in the boss room. Now the fight is not hard more tedious or at least for me since it’s real easy to get in her sights and web rush is really hard to control with the level layout. Overall there’s a comics feel to the game and if it’s your game idea of a game I’d say the fans will be happy.
Overall I think this is a game made for fans ; the fans have cried for open world and more like Spiderman 2 and Beenox has listened. The sad part of fan generated games is they go really good or like sonic very bad. There’s not enough to judge it based on what I call a bad game but from what I have seen it’s a somewhat fun game when the core features work. Boss fights take advantage of the core features mostly. I was expecting to see a few levels for the amount of storage space the game demo took up and the fact of that skills couldn’t be bought made me sad that peter was gaining experience but I couldn’t add to what would have been a rather nice skill tree. Early on of the game pulls back to Spiderman 2 versus edge of time for the better mostly but since they didn’t do an open world demo im worried about how to grade based on the fact of closed off sand box works well with this game and outside levels are chaotic. Overall it’s a nice little game to see whether or not the game is right for you but it felt shallow to be honest like they could have added a bit more to the demo Grade: c+/b- this is based on what you look for in games because a lot of the game was locked up.
